A courtyard is hardscape. A garden is dirt. The plumbing does not care. The splash does.

Pavers throw water onto doors. Dirt forgives. Pick the setting before the piece.

Courtyard: pavers, stucco, a door, a committee. Splash is a stain. Equipment has to disappear. That is Trinity and downtown.

Garden: planting beds, mulch, a little forgiveness if a drop lands. Equipment can hide in shrubs that are actually shrubs, not a 12-inch HOA hedge.

The same bowl behaves differently in each. We aim jets lower on hardscape. We still do not want a swamp in the bed.

Garden-center 'garden fountains' on a Trinity courtyard are how you get a letter. The noun on the box is not the setting.

Downtown NPR courtyards are hardscape even when there is a planter. Treat splash like it will stain. Magnolia Valley gardens can take a drop. The plumbing is the same trade. The mess is not.
